Engagement Etiquette Tips You Should Really Know

25 Thu Oct 2018
Posted by Mel Krumholtz

Weddings have changed a lot in the past couple of decades – and while many etiquette rules have gone out of “style” and don’t make much sense in 2018 anymore, the truth is that many other etiquette rules still make a lot of sense.
What are some of the wedding engagement etiquette tips all couples should keep in mind? We have some tips for you – so read on and find out more.
• Call your parents and your closest friends first. We know you want to show the world what a great step you have just made in your life. However, you shouldn’t post anything on Social Media before you actually tell the news to those who are most important in your life. You wouldn’t want someone you haven’t seen in years to learn about the engagement before your own mom does, right?
• When posting on Social Media, try to be modest about it. Talking about the carats or the weight of the ring is out of discussion – but you might also want to make sure you pay attention to the actual photo you post on Instagram and Facebook. For instance, a picture that solely focuses on the ring might come off as consumerist or materialistic, whereas a picture that shows your left hand and your fiancé’s hand brought together will focus on the relationship and love story.
• You don’t have to answer uncomfortable questions about the ring. Yes, some people might want to know details about the carats and even the cost of the engagement ring. However, if you don’t feel comfortable answering these questions, just diffuse them or plainly tell people you are not OK with these types of questions and then move the conversation on to another topic. They should understand.
• The engagement party can be planned by anyone. Traditionally, the parents of the bride are given the first opportunity to host the engagement party, followed by the parents of the groom. However, these days, the party is hosted by pretty much anyone who wants to do it: parents, friends, or the couple themselves. Also, you don’t have to wear white if you don’t want to – it’s nice if you want to stand out, but not mandatory.
